Our Own Fly Buys System for Rewarding Good Behaviours

I forgot to mention the meeting I had last week with GCAMHS. We spoke at length on a variety of things including the different events that had happened to Brodie in his life from his Dad and I splitting to his Nanna passing away to our moving here to Victoria. We also spoke about the reward system that the boys and I have at home with the stamps stickers and how that was working to a point. Cate suggested another type ... I call it our own version of Fly Buys... Let me explain how it works:

The boys have a book each and the books look pretty much like a bank statement with the activity listed, a debit column, a credit column and a totals column. I write down the activity the amount of points it is worth and the running total of points acquired. I reward the boys with points for different things that they do from brushing their teeth, changing out of their school uniform, making lunch for school, checking the letter box, taking our rubbish, etc. Points on average that are awarded is 5 but the boys can earn bonuses. For example helping with the washing or shopping can earn 20 points, the same with cleaning their bedroom. We offered 20 bonus points each for cleaning the lounge room or a bonus of 25 each if they can do it without arguing.
The boys can exchange the points for various things like computer or play station time or even some money if that is what they would like. So far it is working an absolute treat and they are loving it. I told the boys that I will not deduct points for the first two weeks but after that I will start deducting points for things like swearing and maybe some other things which will be negotiated with later on as the need arises.

I am hoping this will continue to work. I let Br. Smith at Church know about our scheme and that we will probably provide them with slips to fill in to award points for positive behaviours that the boys (mostly Brodie though) display at Church. We also mentioned this at the meeting yesterday and that if the school wishes to award points that we would honour them at home too. Anything that works to encourage good behaviour and their responsibilities is a good thing. I guess it's just a wait and see thing to see if it continues to work.
