WIP - Crochet - The Midwife Blanket

Here's what my "Midwife Blanket" looks like so far.
I had to count the stitches more than once when I cast on. I miscounted the first time around.
Thankfully the numbers were right on my second go.

I am loving how it looks. Although this photo doesn't really show the yarn as green. It looks more blue with this lighting. Next time I shall take a photo during the day and hope that the colour shows up properly.

Shopping For Fun

Brodie and I went for a drive to Spotlight the other day. I wanted to get some continuous lace curtain to replace the one in the lounge room that Missy Issy tore when she decided it would be a really great thing to lie down on the pretty curtain.

This is the style that I ended up with. I bought white. I'm thinking that perhaps ivory may have been a better choice. Oh well. Maybe the next time I will get ivory rather than white.

I have also decided I wanted to make the "Call the Midwife" baby blanket. I didn't know which colour to make when I decided I wanted to make it. I also had no idea who to make it for, Then I realised that one of Brodie's friends, the one who helped keep him awake for his EEG that he needed to have done, is expecting a baby in about 10 weeks. So I bought green yarn. Mainly because I don't know what she's having and I thought that it would be fine for either a boy or a girl.

While we were walking around the store look what jumped in to my basket! Around 4.5 skeins of yarn. They are called a mill end assortment. Not bad for $6.99; for that price I can't really complain. Who knows they may end up as another blanket.

Crochet - WIP - Temperature Blanket - Week 4

I can't believe how much green there is in my blanket. Green is for temperatures within the following range 20°C - 25°C. That is a lot of milder weather for Summer. Something you don't see very often. Although I have to admit even though we have had a lot of temperatures in the low to mid 20's a lot of them have been very humid.

Kitty Cat Play Fighting

I love how my cats get along so well with one another. I caught them play fighting. Not bad considering Missy Issy is almost 18 months but C.K. is around 11 years old.

C.K. quite often starts the play but Issy usually finishes it. She will stick her paw in his face as if to say "Talk to the Paw, I am not listening". She will also do this when she isn't in the mood to play as well. As I said C.K. starts it most of the time.
I am just glad they get on so well.

Mark mentioned something about going to a barbecue at the Amateur radio club today.
Considering it's still early I'm not sure if we are still going. It all depends on how Mark is feeling and whether he is up to travelling.

This is one of my favourite Aussie songs. Great Southern Land by Icehouse. This video is part of a play list of Australian Artists. If you get the chance to listen to some of them please do so. Some are really good.

Wrist and Ankle Weights

Aldi had some fitness gear on special on Saturday. Brodie and I went there to check it out. I wanted to get some wrist and ankle weights for when I was doing some exercises at home and to possible use when I go walking.

Not bad for $16.99

The wrist and ankle weights weight half a kilo each (1 pound) and the little weights you carry are one kilo each (2.2 pounds). Decent enough to use around home. Although the ones I use at my exercise group are heavier but that's okay. I am supervised there so I think it's okay to use the heavier stuff then.

Nice and tidy in the box

They don't look too bad.

While I got the pink set for myself. Brodie ended up purchasing a teal/blue set for himself. The only difference with his set is his wrist weights are not in a glove style like mine. They are all the same weights as well. I can't really complain for the price that I paid. They still add some resistance which is good in my book.

WIP - Crochet - Corner to Corner Blanket

It seems that for now my crochet mojo is back!
While I am in the mood to crochet I thought I would make another c2c blanket. Mainly because the pattern is so easy to follow.

I only have two balls of this particular yarn, which I bought from Spotlight, so I don't know how big it will end up. I am thinking it would be perfect for a baby pram or to use to drape over a baby in a car seat. I shall see how it goes.

I got so frustrated last night when I had almost finished this blanket and realised that I didn't have enough yarn to complete it. I had to frog it and pull it back to just before the first ball of yarn ran out. Now to try again.

Diabetes Check Up

Yesterday afternoon I saw my GP. It was time to get the results from all the blood tests that I had done last week and to get my blood pressure checked. He said I only came in to show off because the results all came back "NORMAL".

He took my BP and said 'wow' .. 124/72 (also one of my best readings ever - last time it was 126/70) HbA1c is 5.9 mmol/L (39) which is my BEST ever
Fasting glucose was 5.3 mmol/L (down from 6.3 mmol/L)
Cholesterol is also down and the combined total was 3. He said he wished his level were as good.
Liver, kidney and thyroid functions were normal Vitamin D, blood count, platelets normal

I am sure he mentioned a few other things but I can't remember them. All I know is that all that hard work of calorie counting, exercise and the extra walking has certainly paid off. Not only are things visible on the outside with the inches that I have lost around my waist and the drop in clothing sizes but my insides are doing so much better as well.

I am feeling pretty darned good right now. I even treated myself to a new hairstyle too. I know I deserved this reward. Time to do a happy dance!

A rare photo of me and my new hairdo.

Thankful Thursday

Here's what I am thankful for this week:

  • Mark and I were able to go out on Saturday night. We were celebrating being together for ten years. I can't believe it was ten years ago that we started dating. ♥♥ I am surprised he has put up with my eccentricities for so long or he has learned to ignore them ☺ ♥♥
  • air-conditioning, Have I mentioned recently that I truly dislike hot weather?
  • cool changes, they are very, very welcome.
  • the smell of rain on a hot day. It's one of my most favourite smells that and bread baking, yum!
  • going out for a picnic lunch with some of the ladies and gents from the Diabetes Support Group. It's always nice to catch up with them for a talk and a laugh before the meetings start back in February.

What are you thankful for this week?

Crochet - WIP - Temperature Blanket - Week 2

Here's what my blanket looks like so far. I am loving how this blanket looks so far.
The darker red/burgundy was for temperatures over 37°C (almost 100°F) It was almost 42°C that day. I really don't want too many stripes of that colour on the blanket. Yesterday's stripe was the lighter blue. It was only 17°C. Such a HUGE drop from the day before.

I wonder what next weeks stripes will look like.

I added to my miniature Doctor Who collection over the weekend from one of those machines that are coin operated and dispense a toy at random. Luckily me, I now have the 10th and 11th Doctors.

I have managed to lose the Weeping Angel I had. It seems that Missy Issy liked the container she was in and the angel has disappeared! At least I still have the baby Adipose.

Crochet - WIP - Temperature Blanket - Week 1

Not the best photo and it's the only one I have taken so far but this is one weeks worth of temperatures for my blanket. As you can see I went with the c2c (corner to corner) style.

I did swap the colours a little.

Just to note that this was the first time in almost two months since I picked up my crochet hook. I guess I just needed the right project to get me started again,

I've Lost MORE Weight

I was looking at some gorgeous dresses and skirts online and wondering about the size I would need to purchase for myself. Considering the weight that I have been losing recently I had thought I better get the old tape measure out and compare my measurements to that on the website for the sizes. Turns out I have lost another inch around the waist, yay! But sadly another inch off the boobs *sigh*

Maybe I should hold off purchasing those clothes for a little while longer. As of this morning I have lost 12.4 kg (27.33 lb) in the last three months. However, the BIG total when I weighed my heaviest & I was diagnosed with Diabetes in July 2011 .. may I have a drum roll please ... is now 33.5 kg (73.85 lb).

It's no wonder some of my pants were falling down if I had my phone in my pocket :) At least all the calorie counting and the walking is paying off big time.

He doesn't talk much on the phone these days but I a glad I got to talk with him.

I love this photo. It's a recent one, sent to me on Boxing Day last year by my niece (bubz Grandma). Dad is holding his Great-great-granddaughter Sienna-Grace, who is almost 1 month old in that photo.
5 generations were together that day ♥

Crochet - Temperature Blanket

A few days ago I came across a post on Facebook that talked about a Temperature Blanket.
Basically you use the daily maximum temperature (for a whole year) as a guide to the colours you will use to make the blanket. A row a day. That wont be too difficult, right? The photo below came from that Facebook post but sadly I can't remember who originally shared it, sorry. I would love to give them credit for it but I just don't recall who posted it. (Repeat Crafter Me shared this idea on Facebook. Thanks Jen Bibb for letting me know).**Edited Feb 17 2016**

Photo credit goes to Karen Stewart from Chocolate Dog Studio

The temperature scale in the thermometer is based on a weather pattern that truly doesn't suit the Australian climate. So I altered it and drew up my own thermometer. Which is in the photo below.

Since deciding on the scale and the colours in the photo I have changed my mind on the actual colours I am going to use. Mainly because I didn't have the dark green in my yarn stash in the quantity I wanted and I couldn't be bothered running to the shops to buy some.

My new colours are as follows:
Dark Red      37°C ↑
Red      32°C - 36 °C
   Orange     25°C - 31°C
Green     20°C - 25°C
Light Blue     13°C - 19°C
Light Purple     7°C - 12°C
Purple     1°C - 6°C
Blue     Below 0°C

We have some horribly hot days here (sometimes around 45°C that's about 115°F in the old scale) and as far as I know we don't really get any days that are anywhere near freezing (0°C) not for a maximum temperature only the minimum.

I was thinking of doing the granny stripe pattern but I'm not so sure. It will be really BIG and heavy by the time next summer starts and I don't like the idea of something so big being on my lap when it comes to adding a row or two in hot weather. I have decided on doing a corner to corner blanket (c2c). I know it will be rather large by next summer but it wont be quite as big as the granny stripe.

I thought I would collect a few days worth of temperatures before beginning the blanket. I've never made a c2c blanket before so that's a challenge in itself. I'll be checking out the video tutorial that Mikey (from The Crochet Crowd) made.
Hopefully I will remember to take photos and share a weekly or maybe a fortnightly update on the blankets progress. I like the idea of a piece of work showing a years worth of weather.

Gifts From Lakes

Mark's sister-in-law posted some gifts for us yesterday afternoon and they arrived this morning.
Granted that they live just three or so hours drive away but Australia Post you surprised us! we didn't expect them until tomorrow.

Have a look at that AWESOME candle! It looks just like a ball of yarn! I LOVE it.
I shall never, ever burn it though. It looks too good to do that.
There's also a Doctor Who scarf under that. How amazing will I look when I wear that!
Thank you so much S&S! I LOVE them!

The boys received some Star Wars items. Of course they love them.
Mark received some salty plums. I tried them they weren't as salty as I thought they would be. They are popular in the Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea.
