Work Placement And The Open Cut Mine Fire

photo of the smoke from the fire at the open cut mine, Morwell.  picture is from yahoo news
I drove Angus into Morwell this morning. He started his first day of work placement today. We had to drive past the open cut mine on the way to his work place. The smoke and the smell was horrible. It is no wonder that the people of Morwell are complaining and that some of the schools and child care centres are busing kids out to other towns for the day. It is also no wonder that so many people are having problems with their health as well.

Just driving towards the town itself broke my heart. The damage that the bushfire caused in the area is so awful. The blackened landscape, the road signs were non-existant, the damage on both sides of the freeway. I can totally see why the freeway was closed for a while and that you need to slow down around the township. Luckily visibility was good this morning but I bet when the wind blows just right you wont be able to see across the road at all. Today is day 11 of the fire in the open cut mine. Officials are still unsure as to how much longer it will burn.

I will be thinking of my baby all day and wondering how he is going at work and how he is coping with the smoke and the smell. His work place is only 5 - 10 minutes from the open cut mine. Luckily he finishes work at 1:30 pm and he will be heading to the train station to come home. Sadly the railway track was damaged during the fire so it will be a bus trip for some of the way, although they may have fixed the track by now. I think he'll be able to get the train from Moe to come home. I guess I will find out when he eventually gets home this afternoon.

I am crossing my singers and sending lots or good thoughts and prayers to the people near the fire. I may even do a rain dance and pray it pours over Morwell.

Spring Cleaning, But Its Autumn ..

Photobucket
What a gloriously sunny day today. It was certainly a reprieve from the gloomy overcast days we've had recently. So what did I do today while the weather was nice ... I swept the floor, vacuumed, did two loads of washing, finally took some washing off the line that had been stuck there for almost a week due to the rain and picked Brodie up from school because he wasn't allowed to work because he didn't take his chef's shirt with him.

For some reason the hospital kitchen staff said he was out of uniform and wasn't able to work today. I didn't read anywhere in the contract that stated he had to wear his TAFE chef's uniform to his work placement. Anyway they (work) sent him back to school and school said they didn't want him there because he had no classes to attend. So of course I had to go and pick him up. At least the weather was nice and I didn't have to drive up there in the pouring rain. But that cut into my cleaning so I made Brodie help me a bit when he got home. Surprisingly he helped without moaning about it. I'm still in shock.

I had a visitor coming this afternoon which was one of the main reasons I was cleaning/tidying up this morning ( I couldn't let my visitor see how grotty the house was). I got to meet a twitter friend for the first time, @MissMamaBear & her LittleBear. They were coming to town to visit family and popped in for a cuppa. It was nice to be able to put a face to the name.

I even managed to get some knitting done this afternoon. The little hedgehog will be finished by the end of this week hopefully. Of course there will be photos when I am done.

My only problem now is to work out what we are going to eat for dinner. I am sure if I ask the kids for suggestions they will say take-away!

Work Placement

As part of the his TAFE course requirements Brodie has to do 6 days of work placement over the next couple of months. He has been fortunate enough to be able to work in a town close by our own in a cafe/pizza place at Boss Hoggs Pizza, well at Mazza's coffee shop which is the same business really.

I was surprised that they have a website for their small business. Not that is a bad thing I think all businesses should have their own websites!

Anyway, Brodie is working their today. I hope that he enjoys himself & is able to show off his talents!
